New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza detected in swans found dead in the territory of the municipality of Damwiler (Meuse) confirm the circulation of the virus in wild birds.
As a result, an interdepartmental prefectural decree was issued to define a temporary control zone (ZCT) with a radius of 20 km around the place where the dead birds were found, affecting the departments of Meuse and Mert and Moselle, within which sanitary measures are strengthened. This ZCT, which includes the department’s 13 communes, is in addition to the one defined last week around Madin Lake.
From now on, 59 communes of Meurte and Mosellelisted below refer to the following measures:
- All owners of domestic and captive birds, both professional and private, are required to strictly observe biosecurity measures, in particular, shelter of animals, protection of their feed and drinking water, cleaning and disinfection of equipment and equipment on the farm. Any mortality or abnormal clinical signs should be reported to the veterinarian observing the farm or yard.
- All places where birds and birds are kept in captivity are subject to special requirements detailed on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty and available at the following address (here)
- To detect the appearance of the disease, a monitoring system has been established through self-monitoring in farms where more than 250 poultry of all species and all types of production are kept.
- The movement of poultry, including game, of all species and all stages of production is also subject to self-control.
- As for the management of hunting in the temporary control zone, measures are applied
- Transportation and release of game birds from farms located in the zone of temporary control is allowed under certain conditions.
- Movement and transportation of killed game birds in the zone of temporary control and its meat is prohibited.
- There are restrictions on the movement and use of decoys.
To limit the risk of spreading the infection, we remind you of the importance of strict implementation of biosecurity measures and increased surveillance by specialists, private bird owners and hunters. Biosecurity measures are available here.
You are encouraged to report any clinical signs or mortality to the DDPP of Meurthe-et-moselle (ddpp@meurthe-et-moselle.gouv.fr) or to your veterinarian.
Regarding the recommendations for the public aimed at limiting the transmission of the virus between animals, the following recommendations should be followed
- Avoid contact with wild birds, including feathers and droppings.
- Do not touch or pick up wild, sick or dead birds.
- If you find a dead bird, do not touch or move it. Any dead bird, especially a wild waterfowl, must be reported to the town hall where it was found or to the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) on 06 99 21 94 43 or by email at sd54@ofb.gouv.fr
We remind you that the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs, and in general any food products from poultry, does not pose a danger to humans.
