The NMC is asking medical colleges to submit a report on student suicides in the last 5 years

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked all medical colleges to provide details of the number of students who have committed suicide in the past five years. The NMC has also asked the colleges to provide details of students who have left the colleges during this time.

Colleges have been ordered to provide working hours and weekly leave for students for the past five years. Medical colleges must submit this information to the NMC by October 7.

The NMC has sought these details from medical colleges after its anti-rust committee received many complaints from students and their parents.

Expressing concern over incidents of suicide and suicidal tendencies among students, the NMC said that even if not all such incidents were related to clothing, many suicide cases had a link.

So, Aujender Singh, deputy secretary of the Council of Postgraduate Medical Education and member-secretary of the anti-rusting committee, asked the medical colleges to submit details of suicides, resignations and working hours after the NMC looked into the complaints received.

Recently, junior MBBS students at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Indore, accused several of their senior classmates of forcing them to pretend to have sex with the help of pillows and raping their female classmates. This came to light when students sent a complaint to the University Grants Commission’s anti-rust service. Junior students have called the UGC anti-robbery helpline after being bullied by their seniors.
