UGC seeks report from GD Goenka University on fight between Indian and Nigerian students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday sought a report from GD Goenka University in Haryana’s Sokhna on campus clashes between Indian and Nigerian students, officials said. The UGC also directed the university to ensure that such incidents do not recur. “It has come to the notice of the UGC that there have been clashes between Nigerian and local students in the university campus, causing tension among the students,” UGC Joint Secretary Surender Singh said.

“The university is instructed to take appropriate measures and send a detailed report to the commission. Appropriate measures should also be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future,” he added. Tension gripped the university campus, located near Sohna, about 50 km from the national capital, after clashes broke out between Indian and Nigerian students on the football field last week. Six students were injured in the incident and the two groups lodged cross-FIRs with the Sona city police station. The university administration suspended 22 students after CCTV footage confirmed their involvement in the clashes.
