IIT Hyderabad to set up DRDO Industry Academia-Centre of Excellence

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has partnered with DRDO to establish the DRDO Industry Academia (DIA) Center of Excellence. The DIA CoE will work on ultra-high-temperature materials for hypersonic vehicles, artificial intelligence for missiles and missile defense, space application technologies, adaptive imaging and image processing, nano-ornithocopter technologies, homing and homing technologies, and additive manufacturing.

“The now sanctioned DIA COE will take this initiative to a higher level and enable IITH, DRDO and industry to contribute to nation building,” the university said. A DRDO cell was established at IIT Hyderabad in 2020-21 working as a satellite center for RIC Chennai (IIT Madras Research park). The then RIC Director Dr. Natrayan took the initiative to contact various defense labs in and around Hyderabad, collect problem statements and share them among IITH faculty through the then Dean (R&D) Prof. Sumahan, IITH.

Following this, IITH faculty and several DRDO scientists came together to draft proposals to meet the exact defense requirements, and many proposals were submitted in fields ranging from additive manufacturing to sensor development, artificial intelligence and space technology, and 13 proposals were submitted amounting to several crores have been sanctioned, the institute said.

Dr Sameer V Kamath, Chairman DRDO and Secretary DDR&D exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding with Prof BS Murthy, Director IITH to set up DRDO Industry Academia Center of Excellence at IIT Hyderabad in the presence of Rajnath Singh during the largest defense exhibition and conference DefExpo22, Gandhinagar October 20.

Expressing his delight at this momentous occasion, Prof. BS Murthy, Director, IITH, said, “Defense of the country is not only the responsibility of those fighting on the frontier but also of every Indian who can make a significant contribution in his own way.
